Below is a contemplative prayer in conjunction with Psalm 75. I humbly ask you to join me in this prayer. Feel free to add as much as you desire to the prayer. My goal is to submit to the guidance of Scripture in the formulation of my prayer life. Psalm 75 has in view God’s righteousness, power, and impending judgment. Such a psalm encourages us to praise God because He has delivered us from His wrath. However, it should also motivate and burden us on the behalf of others. We should not desire anyone to experience the wrath of God. I love you and hope this encourages you to praise and enjoy our great God!
We give thanks to you, O God;
we give thanks, for your name is near.
We recount your wondrous deeds.
God, you are great! You’ve given us your Holy Spirit as a permanent seal of your everlasting presence with us! This gift is unmatched and priceless—You have made us your holy temple. You are always with us, and we will praise You. You are unrivaled, unmatched, and incomparable. You have no equal! By Your wondrous power You redeemed a people for Yourself and to Yourself. Father, thank You for giving us the ability to call you Father! Jesus, You have made us your holy bride and You have made us to desire You. Holy Spirit, You are our comfort and strength—thank you for working within us! God is our salvation, and we will praise You!
2 “At the set time that I appoint
I will judge with equity.
3 When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants,
it is I who keep steady its pillars. Selah
You, my God, are our rock and foundation. It is in You that we live, move, and have our being. Your righteousness sustains us, and your righteousness will bring sin to its end. Thank You for Your mercy and grace that You lavishly bestow upon us. Thank You for not judging me by my righteousness, but You evaluate me by the righteousness You gift to me through Christ!
4 I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn;
5 do not lift up your horn on high,
or speak with haughty neck.’”
Forgive me, my merciful King, for I am the boastful. I am the wicked. I am the one who rebels against You in my pride and arrogance. May You be exalted through my life and not me! Permit me the strength to repent to You—enable me to help others repent as well. We are dust before You, but You know our frame and weakness. You redeem us and bring us into intimate fellowship with You. In our pride we depart from You to our own ends. We boast of our successes, possessions, thoughts, and plans—forgive us of this iniquity. Allow Your mercy to cleanse us from our arrogant sin and we will encourage others to seek You. Teach us to boast in You and exalt in You!
6 For not from the east or from the west
and not from the wilderness comes lifting up,
7 but it is God who executes judgment,
putting down one and lifting up another.
Teach us to know that You, O God, are the one who exalts. You show great kindness to Your people. By Your awesome hand we know endless pleasure and deep satisfaction. You bring us out of judgment and wrath into grace and mercy. In foolishness we exalt ourselves, but You alone see and test our hearts. You alone know what is in us. You alone possess the ability and right to condemn or pardon. We praise You for the privilege of adoption through redemption. It is a great honor to be known by You and to be called your beloved! You have elevated us so that our feet are on the Rock that is Christ Jesus. We are deserving of death, and You are deserving of all honor and praise; yet, You took our place in death and bestowed the honor of Your life upon us. Thank You, thank You, thank You! We praise You, our loving and powerful God. There is none like You! You stand alone in righteousness, and Your mercy is unmatched!
8 For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup
with foaming wine, well mixed,
and he pours out from it,
and all the wicked of the earth
shall drain it down to the dregs.
Though great mercy flows from You, You will not pardon those who reject You! You are always righteous, and no sin goes unnoticed or unaddressed. You stand ready to forgive and to condemn! Permit us the passion and skill to proclaim both Your mercy and wrath. Help us to never lose sight of You or to pervert Your character. You are a God that forgives, yet You are always holy. You have overcome evil, and you will completely remove all evil through the outpouring of Your wrath—help us to live soberly and in complete awareness that You will punish sin!
9 But I will declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 All the horns of the wicked I will cut off,
but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.
By Your grace and mercy I will praise You! Jesus, You are worthy of all praise, for You have defeated death and sin. To those who respond to and approach You, You give us abundant life. But those who rebel, you eternally cut off from your presence and the joy of Your fellowship. Grant us the ability to see and savor You. Grant us the ability to call others to You. Rescue us from our evil and permit us to abide in Your presence with scores of others. Awaken within us a fear of Your wrath and a love for Your presence. God, You are our God, and we will worship You!
